Activities

Surviving a heart attack is a life changing experience and one that changes us in many ways, however it’s important for us to get back to self.

A heart attack can leave us feeling emotional, anxious, and irritable so it is no wonder with so much going on we can find it difficult to concentrate and focus. Mental activities such as word puzzles and number puzzles not only benefit concentration but are good for mental health such as relieving stress.

Practising skills to see how the body reacts after a heart attack can help to get back to self. Going through the actions of an activity without the application of the activity gives an indication of any discomfort to muscles especially those that involve the chest muscles. For example: mime the action of sweeping the floor. Practising skills will improve muscle memory.

Always check with a healthcare professional before resuming activities after a heart attack.

Gentle activities in the garden such as watering and deadheading are good starters for getting back to self. Avoid any heavy lifting or pulling/pushing actions.

Whatever activities we partake in we must ensure it matches our fitness level. If unsure we should consult a healthcare professional.
